Presentation of OpenBorders Research at the Mogersdorf International Symposium

10/07/2026

Today, 10 July 2026, Prof. Dr. Gorazd Bajc presented the paper The Intangible and Tangible Heritage of the Traumatic Border Issue in the Upper Adriatic since the End of the First World War at the 53rd Internationales Kulturhistorisches Symposion Mogersdorf.

Using maps and photographs, he discussed selected examples of intangible and tangible heritage that emerged at key moments in the delineation of the multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multicultural area along today’s Slovenian–Italian border following the end of the First World War. Particular attention was given to the ways in which political borders, territorial changes, and the traumatic experiences of local populations have shaped collective memory and the heritage landscape of this border region.

The paper was developed within the framework of the European Research Council (ERC) project OpenBorders, led at the Science and Research Centre Koper by Prof. Dr. Borut Klabjan, as well as the research programme P6-0372, the project AID HCH J7-60128, and RSF UM – University of Maribor Research Core Funding, all led by Prof. Dr. Gorazd Bajc at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor.
