03/06/2026

At the Institute for Historical Studies of the Science and Research Centre (ZRS Koper), the first student from the University of Padua was welcomed today. The student will undertake a one-month study internship as part of the cooperation between ZRS Koper and the University of Padua.
This represents an important step in strengthening inter-institutional collaboration.

Student Giacomo Gennari was welcomed upon arrival by the head of the Institute for Historical Studies at ZRS Koper, Dr. Tilen Glavina, and Dr. Borut Klabjan, a researcher at the Institute and head of the ERC project OPEN BORDERS. The exchange was established on the initiative of Dr. Benedetto Zaccaria from the University of Padua, who participates in the OPEN BORDERS project as an external researcher.

Giacomo Gennari will participate in various research and professional activities at the Institute for Historical Studies of ZRS Koper during his stay. Among other tasks, he will conduct interviews on the role of the Italian minority in cross-border interactions and become familiar with research methods as well as the daily work of a research institute.

The internship takes place within the research environment of the OPEN BORDERS project (“Cold War Europe Beyond Borders. A Transnational History of Cross-Border Practices in the Alps-Adriatic area from World War II to the present”), funded by the European Research Council (ERC).The project, led by Borut Klabjan, examines the development of cross-border cooperation between East and West from the end of the Second World War to the present. Using the Alps-Adriatic region as a case study, it explores how people, places, and everyday practices transcended the political and ideological divisions of the Cold War period. In doing so, the project offers a new perspective on European history and highlights the importance of cross-border connections in shaping contemporary Europe.

The arrival of the first student from the University of Padua represents an important milestone in the development of cooperation between the two institutions and opens new opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices among young researchers and research institutions in the broader cross-border area.

The OPEN BORDERS project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the ERC 2021 Advanced Grant scheme (Grant Agreement No. 101054963).
